Quaker Valley Middle School Named National Blue Ribbon School

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona today recognized 356 schools as the 2024 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Schools. This prestigious recognition highlights schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups.

Quaker Valley Middle School has been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious designation recognizes the school’s exceptional academic performance and commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. The announcement was made on Monday, September 23, 2024, further solidifying Quaker Valley Middle School's legacy of excellence.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was established in 1982 to recognize public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that are achieving superior academic results or making notable improvements in closing achievement gaps among student groups. Schools that receive this honor serve as models of effective school practices for state and district educators and communities across the nation.

Dr. Anthony Mooney, Principal of Quaker Valley Middle School, expressed his pride and gratitude for this recognition. "This award reflects the hard work, dedication, and collaborative spirit of our students, staff, and families. We pride ourselves on making Quaker Valley Middle School a learning environment where every staff member and student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Being named a National Blue Ribbon School is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our entire school community to excellence in education."

This is not the first time Quaker Valley Middle School has been recognized for its outstanding performance. The school has received multiple accolades in the past, including its designation as a Pennsylvania School to Watch and Apple Distinguished School, recognizing its innovative teaching practices. Additionally, Quaker Valley Middle School also received National Blue Ribbon School recognition in 2002.

A National Blue Ribbon School award flag displayed in a school’s entryway or on a flagpole is a widely recognized emblem of exceptional teaching and learning. These schools serve as models of effective and innovative practices for educators across the nation.

The Department recognizes all schools based on student performance data including assessment results, student subgroup performance and graduation rates. Schools are recognized in both or either of two performance categories:

  • Exemplary High Performing Schools: These schools are among the top performers in their state as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools: These schools excel in narrowing achievement gaps between different student groups and the overall student body.

Katy Chapman, Assistant Principal of Quaker Valley Middle School, added, "This recognition is not only a reflection of our academic achievements but also the positive culture and relationships we build every day. We are incredibly honored to receive this designation and will continue to strive for excellence in all areas."

Each nominated school submits a comprehensive application detailing its school culture, curriculum, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership, family, and community involvement.

Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The Department invites nominations for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award from the top education official in all states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education.

Superintendent Dr. Tammy A. Andreyko praised the school for its remarkable achievements. "Quaker Valley Middle School’s Blue Ribbon designation is a proud moment for our entire district. This achievement speaks to the strength of our teachers, the leadership of our administration, and the unwavering support of our families. As a district, we are committed to providing an unparalleled educational experience for every student, and Quaker Valley Middle School exemplifies that mission in every way."

School Board President Jon Kuzma echoed Andreyko’s praise: “This recognition of the middle school is well deserved, and will be celebrated by the entire District, as it highlights the shared commitment to excellence that defines Quaker Valley. This honor reinforces the high academic standards we set across all our schools, and it’s a testament to the strength and unity of our district.”
