Quaker Valley School District Notification Regarding PowerSchool Data Breach

January 16, 2024 Letter:

Dear Quaker Valley Families,

We are writing to provide an update regarding the recent security incident involving PowerSchool, the platform Quaker Valley uses for managing the Student Information System. As we shared in our initial communication on January 10, 2025, we were notified by PowerSchool last week that unauthorized access was discovered on their customer support platform from the use of stolen credentials. As a result, some information within the PowerSchool Student Information System was compromised.

Though this breach occurred in PowerSchool’s system and was not a direct attack on Quaker Valley, the District takes our students’ and staffs’ privacy seriously. We will follow all current policies and relevant state laws with respect to data privacy and breach notification, and we expect the same of PowerSchool.

At this time, we can share that Quaker Valley does not use PowerSchool to capture student social security information. Therefore, no current students have had that information compromised because of PowerSchool’s breach.

For additional information about this incident, PowerSchool has released the following PowerSchool FAQ document

Once again, PowerSchool has shared that the unauthorized access has been stopped, and they do not anticipate the data being shared or made public. In addition, PowerSchool has shared that the data was deleted without further replication.

Should you have additional questions, you can leave a message with our Communications Department at [email protected]. Quaker Valley will continue to provide updates as we receive more information from PowerSchool.

Sincerely,

Quaker Valley School District

January 10, 2025 Letter:

Dear Quaker Valley School District Families and Educators,

We are writing to inform you of a recent security incident involving PowerSchool, the platform Quaker Valley uses for managing the Student Information System. We were notified by PowerSchool that their customer support platform was accessed by an unauthorized individual using stolen credentials. As a result, some information within the PowerSchool Student Information System was compromised. This was an international incident over which individual school districts, including Quaker Valley, had no control.

PowerSchool has assured us that they are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the full scope of the breach. They have committed to communicating further details about any data that was compromised. Additionally, PowerSchool has indicated that as their investigation continues to progress, they will notify individual users if their data was compromised.

PowerSchool shared that the unauthorized access has been stopped, that they do not anticipate the data being shared or made public.  In addition, PowerSchool believes the data was deleted without further replication.

The Quaker Valley School District takes privacy and data security very seriously and is disappointed that this unfortunate event has occurred. Although it occurred in PowerSchool’s system and not ours, we are prudently reviewing all records to ensure we determine the complete extent of the incident. The District will follow our current policies and all relevant state laws with respect to data privacy and breach notification.

Should you have any questions, you can contact our Communications Department at [email protected]. We understand that this situation may cause concern, and we want to assure you that we will provide updates as we receive more information from PowerSchool.

Sincerely,

Quaker Valley School District
