The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) is proud to recognize the recipients of the 34th annual WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award, with 20 candidates (10 male, 10 female) selected from a group of 158 nominees.
Each winner is awarded a scholarship of $1,000 to attend the college of their choice. This year’s group brings the amount of scholarship money given by the WPIAL to its James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award recipients to $759,000 since 1992.

Joyce "Jay" Olawaiye (Quaker Valley): Joyce “Jay” Olawaiye is a hardworking and well-rounded senior at Quaker Valley High School. She has earned a 4.50 GPA while taking challenging classes and staying involved in many activities.
Jay is a talented athlete who has earned eight varsity letters—four in tennis and four in track & field. She was captain of the tennis team twice and led the track & field team during her senior year. In track & field, Jay has won several medals, including gold and silver in the triple jump at the WPIAL Championships and a silver medal at the PIAA State Championships. She also helped her team win three straight WPIAL team titles in track & field. In tennis, she helped Quaker Valley earn two section championships and finish second in the WPIAL. Jay qualified for the New Balance Nationals in both indoor and outdoor track, and she holds the school record in the triple jump. In 2023, she received the Western PA Girls’ Tennis Sportsmanship Award.
Jay is very involved in school life. She is part of the National Honor Society, Science Olympiad, Math League, Robotics Club, Mock Trial, Orchestra, Choir, Black Student Union, Culture Alliance, and Student Council. She serves as Student Council president and is on the executive board of the Black Student Union. She also earned a SMART Certification from Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy.
Outside of school, Jay volunteers with Victory Family Church’s Children’s Ministry and the Pittsburgh Area Friday Professionals Organization.
Jay plans to attend Brown University, where she will study science and compete on the track & field team.
