Quaker Valley students will participate in an Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week, December 3-9, 2018. Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer programming, which is designed to demystify computer science and show that anybody can learn the basics of coding. Students will learn basic coding skills during computer class, and have options to extend their learning well beyond an hour.
We live in a world that is surrounded by technology, and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. Unfortunately, only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works, and fewer than half of all schools teach computer science.
Simple computer science activities can help nurture creativity and problem-solving skills. By getting a feel for computational thinking early, students will have a foundation for success in any future career path, which is why Quaker Valley School District implements coding at all grade levels, and will again join more than 100 million students worldwide in an hour of coding activities. In addition, students will have multiple opportunities this year to write programs, solve coding puzzles, design games and mobile apps, program robots to perform tasks, and more using their computational thinking skills.
